The
completed Downtown Commercial Master Plan was presented to Barrie and councilors
have approved it in principle.
Highlights include building on the downtown's strengths - historical,
shopping, entertainment, artistic and cultural elements and creating
neighborhoods to link all of the elements together with the waterfront. In the
downtown itself, pedestrian links would connect the neighborhoods and allow for
walking throughout. A total of 10 different neighborhoods have identified as a
focus for revitalization efforts.
Barrie has been identified as an Urban Growth Centre by the Province as a
place to focus growth and investment that will occur throughout the Greater
Golden Horseshoe. The Downtown Master Plan outlines a vision and a course of
action where Barrie can maximize opportunities for growth. Read

News Regarding the
Go Train
Barrie residents can plan to ride the trains next year (2007). The new
station will be built at Yonge St and Mapleview Drive. The cost of the
project will be split evenly between Barrie and the Provincial and Federal
Governments. The
extension of the Go Train may have an important impact on the prices and
demand of real estate properties in the Barrie area. The Go Train is also
good news for the local business community; it will help Barrie to attract
more business, tourists and people looking for affordable housing. It will
also benefit Barrie residents that work in the Toronto area and will take
the pressure off the 400.
Overall, Go Train runs 181 train trips carrying approximately 160,000
passengers each weekday. The construction of the GO Train service from
Toronto to Barrie is expected to begin in early 2007. Work will start on
refurbishing the Bradford GO Station building, providing extra shelter and
improving passenger service.
